At the EU Open Source Policy Summit in Brussels, GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke said open source developers should be exempted from the EU's proposed new AI regulations.

He believes Europe still has the opportunity to lead the AI space.

  • The Artificial Intelligence Act, introduced in April 2021, categorizes AI apps into unacceptable-risk, high-risk, and not-high-risk applications based on perceived risks.
  • The European Parliament will vote on the draft version soon; if passed, it could be adopted by the end of 2023.
  • He said open-source developers are often volunteers who don't reap any profits for their contributions.
  • Dohmke added that the law should be fair and balanced to the open-source community as the policy could set a precedent for how AI is regulated worldwide.
