Author and entrepreneur Neal Stephenson, who coined the term "metaverse," has spoken extensively about AI-generated content, referring to it as "hollow and uninteresting."

In an interview with the Financial Times, Neal Stephenson addressed the impact of technology and its role in Silicon Valley.

Stephenson coined the term metaverse in his 1992 sci-fi novel "Snow Crash."

  • Along with Bitcoin Foundation co-founder Peter Vessenes, Stephenson founded Lamina1, which uses blockchain technology to build an "open metaverse."
  • Stephenson told the FT that things "generated by AI might seem comparable to something produced by a human."
    • But he said users are unaware of "communing with the creator."

In November, OpenAI launched ChatGPT featuring wide-ranging abilities, including writing essays and authoring novels, reaching 100 million users in a couple of months.
