Twitter restricting SMS 2FA to Blue subscribers

Twitter has announced that SMS two-factor authentication is now available only for Twitter Blue subscribers.

The company stated that users who have not subscribed to Blue that use SMS-based 2FA have time until March 20, 2023, to switch to an alternative method.

  • According to Twitter, only 2.6% of all active accounts have enabled at least one form of 2FA.
    • SMS authentication makes up 74.4% of these accounts.
    • Authenticator apps are second at 28.9%, with security keys at 0.5%.
    • Accounts can have multiple forms of 2FA enabled at one time.
  • SMS-based 2FA authentication is considered the least secure method of MFA, a sentiment that Twitter's CEO Elon Musk has also shared publically.
