Salesforce Ventures to invest in generative AI startups

Telemarketers and teachers may be the jobs most threatened by AI, according to a new preprint paper.

Researchers developed a method to predict which jobs and industries will be most "exposed" to the latest advancements in AI and language models. The top occupations they said could be most affected by AI are telemarketers, post-secondary teachers across a range of disciplines, sociologists, and political scientists.

The researchers' method, created in 2018, estimated what job descriptions have "changed the most due to advances in AI between 2010 and 2015."

  • This measure, called AI Occupational Exposure, was recently extended to account for the latest advances in language modeling.
  • The higher the AI Occupational Exposure score, the greater the chance that a job or industry will be taken over by automation.
  • Their list of jobs with the highest scores is available here.
  • Meanwhile, the top industries most affected by AI were said to be legal services and securities, commodities, and investments.

The research specifically looked at AI language modeling, the subset of AI that predicts the next word in a sentence, underpinning OpenAI's GPT family and other large language models.

  • Their paper, "How Will Language Modelers like ChatGPT Affect Occupations and Industries?" is non-peer-reviewed and available on SSRN.
  • It comes from Princeton University's Ed Felten, Wharton School of Business' Manav Raj, and NYU Stern's Rob Seamans.
