Sony, the electronics giant that sells one of the world's most popular videogame consoles, launched the second version of its VR headset late last month.
Called the PlayStation VR2, the new device comes more than six years after Sony's first attempt to bring VR gaming to the masses.
Sony said it sold about 5 million units of the PlayStation VR between its launch in October 2016 and the end of 2019.
- That is less than 10% of the number of PlayStation consoles the company sold over the same period.
- Market research firm Newzoo estimates that VR gaming accounted for 1% of global 2022 gaming revenue.
- Sony's PlayStation has outsold Microsoft's Xbox over the last two console generations, giving the company a much larger footprint.
- Sony has announced 38 games expected to launch for the VR2 by the end of March, though most are from small studios or unestablished franchises.
