Ibogaine, a psychoactive substance, is being used to treat addiction to opioids, stimulants, and alcohol.

The use of ibogaine for healthcare treatment has also caught the interest of researchers and drug developers as they continue to uncover the pharmacological potential of the substance.

  • It is a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States, meaning it is illegal to use, possess, or distribute.
  • Since ibogaine is a stimulant, there is a risk that it can speed up heart rate enough to cause cardiac arrest.
  • The FDA has paused clinical trials for other synthetic compounds over safety concerns in the past.
    • Some experts in the field argue that companies should not solely profit from indigenous plants.
  • Tom Feegel, CEO of Beond, an ibogaine therapy provider in Cancun, opened a fully certified Class 1 medical facility regulated by the Mexican federal government.
    • The clinic offers holistic treatment to 30 people at a time and uses the drug to eliminate withdrawal symptoms, mainly from opioids.
