Southern California Public Radio's podcast studio

LAist Studios, Southern California Public Radio's podcast studio, is facing cutbacks and layoffs.

CEO Herb Scannell announced a shuffling of how it will operate and spend its money.

SCPR will eliminate about 12% of its positions.

  • LAist Studios will be cutting back on limited-run podcast series while continuing to produce the weekly How to LA and the daily LA Report
  • SCPR is facing a drop in advertising revenue, and Scannell described the situation as "a rollercoaster — a rollercoaster up and a rollercoaster down," he said. "Now it's down."
    • Scannell told LAist.com that revenue has dropped by a "couple of million dollars."
  • The organization will aim to speed up how fast news gets to its website, and it will hire more website-focused reporters
