Virginia's Newport News School Board voted to terminate school district superintendent George Parker III on Wednesday.
The decision comes after it emerged that the school failed to prevent the shooting of a teacher by a student, even though staff allegedly warned administrators three times that the 6-year-old boy had a gun and had threatened other students.
- Abigail Zwerner was injured after being shot by a student at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, on Jan. 6.
- The local school board voted 5-1 to terminate Parker hours after a lawyer representing Zwerner announced that her client intends to sue the school district.
- Board member Gary Hunter defended Parker during the meeting and blamed a lack of “commonsense gun laws,” for the incident.
- Parker, who has faced criticism from parents and teachers since the shooting, was terminated as part of an agreement that will see him receive $502,000 in severance.
