Biden called for a ban on online advertising targeting children in his State of the Union address.
The address also called on congress to stop collecting data online from kids and teenagers.
- The speech came before Senator Ed Markey planned to reintroduce the Children and Teens' Online Privacy Protection Act during this congressional session. The bill is an update to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act which Markey wrote in 1998.
- The Computer & Communications Industry, which includes Amazon, Apple, Google, and Meta, responded by saying that regulations would hurt the U.S. tech industry's ability to compete internationally.
- The Interactive Advertising Bureau also spoke out against a ban on ads targeting children.
- 12 congressional sessions since 2011 have tried to pass privacy regulations for children, but none have been successful.
