Former Vice President Mike Pence has been subpoenaed by the special counsel leading investigations into Donald Trump.
The
subpoena relates to an investigation into the former U.S. president's
alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
- Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed special counsel Jack Smith in November to lead ongoing investigations into Trump's conduct during and after his time in office.
- Smith took over several investigations into Trump's efforts to remain in power after losing the 2020 election, his alleged role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riots, and his possible mishandling of official documents after he left office.
- Pence's subpoena comes after months of negotiations between his legal team and federal prosecutors.
- Trump has been accused of trying to pressure
then-vice-president Pence to use his position as leader of the Senate
to intervene in the counting of electoral votes after the 2020 election.
- The
move may indicate that Smith's investigation into Trump's efforts to
remain in power after losing the election is entering a new phase.
