Google is following suit with other cloud giants in pursuing investments and partnerships with AI startups

The search giant’s cloud arm has invested roughly $300M in the San Francisco-based AI startup Anthropic.

  • Google Cloud recently announced its partnership with Anthropic, which markets itself as an AI safety and research company working to build reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems.
  • The partnership designates Google Cloud as Anthropic’s preferred cloud provider. Google Cloud plans to develop large-scale, next-generation TPU and GPU clusters to further support Anthropic’s AI systems.
  • The $300M deal gives Google a 10% stake in the AI startup.
  • Google’s collaboration with Anthropic is said to be different from the one between Microsoft and OpenAI. Google only intends to be Anthropic’s tech supplier, while Microsoft is looking to incorporate OpenAI’s technology into a wide range of its products and services.
