Massachusetts Institute of Technology engineers announced that they had invented full-color microscopic light-emitting diodes by stacking diodes for multicolored, versatile pixels.

The innovation will provide high-definition visuals with LED technologies and allow VR/AR devices to reach even sharper pixel densities.

  • Besides staff from MIT, the research team includes Georgia Tech Europe and Sejong University, among others.
  • Engineers found that stacking pixels can increase the spectrum of colors, reveals an MIT blog post
    • New micro-LEDs could "perform better, require less energy, and last longer than OLEDs," reports MIT.
  • According to Postdoctoral Researcher Jiho Shin, with "vertical micro-LEDs, you could have a completely immersive experience and wouldn't be able to distinguish virtual from reality."
  • The team's results are published in the journal "Nature."
