 Meta announced its intention to buy Within Unlimited in 2021 as part of Meta’s big bet on immersive virtual worlds, or metaverses


  • The lawsuit is widely seen as symbolic of FTC Chairwoman Lina Khan’s opposition to the expansion of big tech firms through acquisitions.
    • The antitrust lawsuit was the first under Khan against one of the “big four” technology giants.
  • The FTC filed suit to block the deal in July, claiming it would lessen competition in the VR industry.  
  • It is also suing Facebook, arguing it has abused a monopoly position in social media.
