Microsoft-owned cloud hosting service GitHub

Microsoft-owned cloud hosting service GitHub has announced plans to lay off 10% of its workforce.

The company has also opted for a remote working model for its remaining employees to cut costs and protect its livelihood.

  • GitHub is a popular website and cloud-based service used by developers to store, manage, and track changes to their code.
  • The layoffs are expected to impact 300 employees, who the company will provide with severance packages and career transition assistance services.
  • GitHub implemented a hiring freeze on Jan. 18, which is still in effect.
  • An email sent by GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke cites “very low utilization rates in our offices around the world” as the main factor behind the adoption of a fully-remote GitHub, which is “a testament to the success of our long-standing remote-first culture.”
  • The company plans to vacate its offices upon lease termination.
