The Ocean Cleanup has raised $25M from Airbnb to clean the ocean of plastic pollution.  The nonprofit is based in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The Ocean Cleanup is a nonprofit that develops technology used to extract and intercept plastics from polluting the ocean. The organization aims to reduce floating plastic by 90% by 2040, claiming that 80% of riverine plastic pollution comes from only 1,000 rivers. So far, it has extracted around 100,000 kg of waste (200,000 pounds) from the ocean. This funding round will be used to develop its plastic extraction technology. The nonprofit was founded in 2013 by Boyan Slat, a recipient of the Thiel fellowship.
