A judge ordered the publication of excerpts from a grand jury report about former President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia. Fulton
County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney specified that a section in
which the grand jury "discusses its concern that some witnesses may
have lied under oath" will be among the parts of the report that will be
published.
- The judge said that the
"compelling public interest in these proceedings and the unquestionable
value and importance of transparency require their release" despite the
fact that "publication may not be convenient for the pacing of the
District Attorney's investigation."
- The special grand jury was convened in early 2021 by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
- Although
the grand jury did not have the power to issue indictments, the report
could recommend the District Attorney to file criminal charges.
- The grand jury last month recommended the release of the report to the public.
- Willis later said that the report should not yet be released because it could undermine her office's investigation.
- At a court hearing on the matter, she said that her office was set to make charging decisions soon.
- The excerpts will be released to the public on Feb. 16.
