The U.K. Royal Navy (RN) is embracing VR to train future sailors in new navigation simulators.
Kongsberg Digital, headquartered in Kongsberg, Norway, has been selected to provide the VR suite of simulators for teaching the RN.
- Sailors use VR headsets to enter a naval metaverse, which can include challenging weather conditions, all from the safety of a naval base.
- The investment is part of a 12-year-long modernization of RN training initiative overseen by Capita, a U.K.-based firm.
- The first RN students are expected to use the navigation simulators in September 2023.
