U.S. retail giant Walmart will shutter three of its 11 U.S. technology hubs, Bloomberg reports.
The decision marks a major reversal after Walmart revealed expansion plans last year.
- Walmart circulated a memo last week announcing plans to shut down its tech offices in Austin, Texas; Portland, Oregon; and Carlsbad, California.
- Employees affected by the closures will be offered positions at other tech hubs, but some may opt to receive severance packages instead.
- Walmart employed about 20,000 technology workers as of March 2022.
- Walmart's announcement comes amid a wider spate of layoffs in the tech sector that have affected workers at several established firms, including Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta.
