Amazon plans to close eight cashierless Amazon Go stores across three U.S. cities.

The decision comes after the company shuttered bookstores and novelty shops around the U.S. as it works to rein in costs.

Amazon said on Friday that it plans to shut down locations in Seattle, New York, and San Francisco.

  • The first Amazon Go outlet was opened near Amazon's Seattle headquarters in 2016.
  • Amazon Go stores leverage the company's "just walk out" technology to provide a cashierless shopping experience.
  • Amazon recently froze the expansion of its cashierless grocery chain, Amazon Fresh, as it reevaluates how to make the brand more attractive to consumers.
  • Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told the Financial Times last month that Amazon's brick-and-mortar grocery business is "still in the early stages" and that he hopes for it to ramp up in 2023.
