Bing gets AI image generator

Microsoft is adding an AI image generator to its new Bing search engine and its Edge browser.

Bing Image Creator is based on an "advanced version" of OpenAI's DALL-E. Users with access to the AI-powered Bing preview can generate images by typing in text descriptions in the chat bar.

The image creator lets users create an image by describing what they want to see in their own words, Microsoft executive Yusuf Mehdi said in a blog post today.

  • The capability means Bing and Edge users can now create both visual and written content directly within the chat interface, he wrote.
  • In Bing preview, the image generator will be integrated fully into the search engine's chat, initially in "creative" mode.
  • In the Edge browser, a new icon will appear in the sidebar for creating images from text prompts.
  • Mehdi said OpenAI's safeguards and added protections were incorporated into the image creator, including controls that auto-block the creation of unsafe and harmful images.
