British law agencies seize $7.4M from digital scammers

 

British law agencies have seized $7.4M and arrested 290 people in a cybercrime operation. 

 A number of the arrested individuals were conducting eBay scams.

  • The operation, named Henhouse, was conducted by the National Crime Agency in cooperation with the police.
  • In addition to the $7.4M, the police authorities have seized items such as:
    • BMW M5 vehicle,
    • Rolex watches
    • Smartphones,
    • Jewelry, etc.
  • On Feb. 8, three people were arrested due to their involvement with international PPE fraud. The three suspects benefitted financially by setting up a U.K. company that would receive compensation for PPE shortages.
  • Six other individuals were arrested in a separate location for creating an online scheme that sold vehicles on eBay that didn't exist. The hackers convinced the victims to pay a deposit to give them a false address where they thought they could see the vehicle.
  • After seizing 250 phones, police found the details of over 2,500 bank accounts suspected of being used to launder millions in 2022.
