The U.S. Commerce Department added
Chinese AI server maker Inspur Group Co. and dozens of other Chinese
entities to its trade blacklist, barring them from accessing U.S.-made
technologies.
The inclusion of Inspur on the Entity List is expected to further impede China's advancements in AI and restrict its computing power.
- Inspur, the second largest AI server maker globally, provides over 50% of AI computer servers in China.
- The
Shandong-based firm supplies the server to Chinese search giant Baidu
and China Mobile. It has partnerships with Tencent Holdings and Alibaba
Cloud.
- The Commerce Department said it implemented the new export restrictions on Inspur and 27 other Chinese entities on national security grounds.
- In order to export technologies to these firms, U.S. companies will require a special license from the government.
- For Inspur, it could restrict its access to advanced chips from Nvidia, which was previously ranked as its second-top supplier.
- Another Chinese AI company on the list is 4Paradigm Technology Co., which provides AI software, solutions, transfer learning, and other services worldwide.
