Chinese regulators are investigating U.S. memory chip manufacturer Micron Technology for possible cyber-security and national security risks.

The announcement comes after the Biden administration imposed export controls and sanctions to prevent China from accessing advanced chips that could be used for military or intelligence purposes.

  • In a brief statement, the Cyberspace Administration of China said the investigation will seek to ensure that Micron is not a threat to the country's national security.
  • Most of the chips that Micron exports to China are used by non-Chinese companies to manufacture other products.
  • The investigation comes after the U.S. blacklisted several Chinese chipmakers, including Micron rival Yangtze Memory Technologies.
  • Micron, one of the world's largest chipmakers, generates ~10% of its revenue in China.
  • Micron's stock lost ~3% on Friday.

  • A senior Huawei official said China's semiconductor industry will be "reborn" due to U.S. sanctions and export controls.
  • Without naming China, Japan on Friday said it will restrict chip exports to other countries to "contribute to international peace and stability."
