Famous football player Lionel Messi’s venture capital (VC) firm Play Time has backed the Web3 gaming startup Matchday.
In its Seed funding round, Matchday raised $21M in total to develop new games and optimize them for casual users.
- Courtside Ventures, Greylock, HackVC, Capricorn Investment Group, and Horizons Ventures also participated in the funding round.
- Matchday
builds Web3-based mobile soccer games and works with FIFA, the
international football organization, and the FIFPRO players association
with official licenses.
- Matchday’s games focus on the true ownership of digital items, including NFTs.
- The startup previously produced a limited-time mini-game for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, giving 2 million NFT player cards to around 600,000 users.
- The
Argentine footballer, who currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain F.C.,
is a brand ambassador for Sorare, an NFT fantasy soccer game.
- Similarly, the famous player signed a $20 million endorsement deal with the fan token platform Socios.
- He also launched his own official NFTs through the Ethernity Chain platform.
