Google CEO defends desk-sharing policy

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has stated that the company's desk-sharing policy is making the employee experience better.

Google employees recently criticized the policy.

  • Google recently stated that its office space costs are set to reach $500M, making for a significant expense.
  • Pichai said several employees have complained that entire parts of Google's offices are empty and that this has made the employee experience worse.
  • Company officials added that according to initial data, Googlers collaborated more efficiently with each other when they worked in the office and at a shared desk.
  • This policy is currently being implemented only for cloud employees, which make up around 25% of the company's overall workforce.

  • Google is requiring employees to be in the office for three days a week in some U.S., U.K., and Asia Pacific locations.
  • As a response to employees' desire to work remotely, Google offers a four-week period that employees can use to work from anywhere in the world.
