What the numbers say: Microsoft's strategic alliance with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to Bing and DALL-E to Bing Image Creator marks one of the most interesting moments in global search competition in years. Google held a massive 85.6% market share advantage over its desktop search rivals in February, according to the search-analysis website Statcounter. Google's dominance in mobile search remained even more extreme at 97.1%.

Relevance: Microsoft's recent announcements pushed Alphabet to advance its own AI-powered solutions, adding search and map features, and begin public testing with its Bard Chatbot. Microsoft shows early signs of making gains with Bing, possibly chipping away a percentage point from Google.

Brands that should care: Other search engines, such as DuckDuckGo, Yahoo!, and Yandex, will be interested in these shifts. Bing's potential rise may threaten them, too. Advertisers will also care, especially if increased competition depresses ads or creates new opportunities outside of Google's playground.
