Meta ends support for NFTs on its platforms

Meta has decided to end support for NFTs on Instagram and Facebook nearly 10 months after it launched the feature to a select group of creators.

The decision was announced by Meta’s commerce and fintech lead, Stephane Kasriel, on Twitter.

Kasriel said the move would allow Meta to focus on other ways to support creators, people, and businesses.

  • The company lead also pointed out that it will continue investing in fintech tools, thanking all the partners who helped develop NFTs on its social media platforms.
  • The feature, dubbed Digital Collectibles, let users display their NFTs on their profiles and sell NFTs directly from Instagram and Facebook by minting them on the Polygon blockchain.

Meta started testing the NFT feature in May 2022 and made it available only to select users.

  • In August 2022, the feature received Ethereum and Flow network support, in addition to Polygon, to allow users to cross-post between two platforms.
  • The company also integrated the decentralized storage protocol Arweave into the feature in early November last year.
