MIT researchers have developed X-AR, an augmented reality (AR) headset that gives humans X-ray vision. 

The system utilizes radio frequency (RF) signals to locate RFID-tagged items hidden from view.

  • The AR headset guides the user to the item's location through an AR interface.
  • The headset verifies that the user has picked up the correct item through a feedback mechanism.
  • The MIT researchers tested the X-AR headset in a warehouse-like environment and found it accurate to within 9.8 centimeters, on average.
    • Users picked up the correct item with 96% accuracy.
  • The X-AR headset could be helpful for e-commerce warehouse workers, manufacturing technicians, and more.
