OpenAI disables ChatGPT in Italy

Italy's data protection agency has ordered ChatGPT to be blocked in the country after determining that OpenAI unlawfully gathered users' data.

OpenAI has since complied with the request, saying it has "disabled ChatGPT for users in Italy."

  • Italy's Privacy Guarantor, the Garante, cited concerns that the practices violate the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
  • On Friday, it made the provisional move to restrict OpenAI from processing Italian users' data.
  • The agency ordered the U.S. AI lab to immediately stop processing that personal data until it changes its data handling practices.
  • The agency has given OpenAI 20 days to respond to how it will tackle the issues, which also include its concerns about ChatGPT's occasionally-inaccurate results and its impacts on children.

  • It's the first time a democratic government has restricted a leading AI platform on a nationwide scale, according to NetBlocks director Alp Toker.
