Twitter will soon only feature posts from paid verified accounts in its "For You" algorithmic feed.

Starting on April 15, Twitter will no longer recommend tweets from unverified accounts in the feed in order to "address advanced AI bot swarms taking over," according to CEO Elon Musk.

  • In the announcement, Musk claimed that the change is the "only realistic way" to prevent artificial intelligence bots from monopolizing the stream of recommended tweets.
  • In addition, only paid verified accounts will be able to vote in Twitter polls for the same reason.
  • "It is otherwise a hopeless losing battle," Musk said.
  • Last week, Twitter announced that "legacy" verified accounts would no longer be eligible for the iconic blue checkmark unless they sign up for a paid subscription starting on April 1.
  • In November, Twitter laid off its ML Ethics, Transparency, and Accountability (META) team as part of the companywide layoffs.
  • The META team was charged with analyzing, explaining, and publishing Twitter's algorithms and ensuring that they remain balanced and fair.
  • Musk recently vowed to open-source Twitter's recommendation algorithm on March 31.
