A Nashville music venue is organizing a special prom event for a student who was barred from their school's prom for wearing a suit instead of a dress.

"i should not have to conform to femininity to attend my senior prom," said B Hayes, an 18-year-old student at Nashville Christian School.

"i will not compromise who i am to fit in a box. who are you to tell us what it means to be a woman?" Hayes wrote on social media.

  • Marcie and Derek Van Mol, the owners of the AB Hillsboro Village music venue, decided to use their "platform to create a safe space for B to celebrate their prom."
  • Another local business owner started a GoFundMe account to raise money for the prom. Any additional funds will go to Inclusion Tennessee and Oasis Center, two charities chosen by Hayes.
  • The party for Hayes and 25 friends will take place at Hillsboro Village venue next month.
