Apple computer shipments fall 40% in Q1

 

According to an IDC report, the five largest computer makers, Lenovo, HP, Dell, Apple, and ASUS, all experienced double-digit drops in shipments during Q1, with Apple's worldwide computer shipments falling 40.5% YoY. Apple, whose shares closed 1.6% lower on Monday, also saw its share of the global computer market drop from 8.6% in the first quarter of 2022 to 7.2% in the first quarter of 2023.

The New York Federal Reserve's March Survey of Consumer Expectations showed that consumers are again growing pessimistic about inflation. Respondents' expectations for the one-year inflation outlook increased for the first time since October, with consumers anticipating an annual inflation rate of 4.7%, 0.5% higher than recorded in last month's survey. 

 

 

Movie theater shares popped on Monday after a record-breaking weekend for "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which posted $375.6M in opening weekend ticket sales, the highest ever for an animated film. AMC closed nearly 7% higher, followed by Cinemark, which rose 6.57%, and IMAX, with a 5.25% bump. 

Moderna is working on expanding its vaccine offerings to treat conditions like cancer and heart disease by 2023, a spokesperson told CNBC, confirming remarks made by the company's chief medical officer over the weekend. Moderna, which has seen its share price fall 65% from its pandemic high, was granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation by the FDA for its personalized cancer vaccine in combination with immunotherapy drug Keytruda in February.

Tesla has announced plans to build a new battery factory in China for its electric vehicles, expanding its footprint in the country, where it already has a car plant in Shanghai. China is Tesla's second-largest market, with the electric vehicle maker holding a 7.9% share of the country's new energy car market.

Today, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla joined more than 200 other pharmaceutical executives in signing a letter calling for the reversal of a federal judge's decision to suspend the FDA's approval of the abortion pill mifepristone. The letter criticizes the ruling for setting a "precedent for diminishing the FDA's authority over drug approvals," creating uncertainty for the pharmaceutical industry.

Fox News has settled a lawsuit with Venezuelan businessman Majed Khalil, which stemmed from false claims the network made about Khalil helping rig the 2020 presidential election against Donald Trump. The settlement comes just a week before Fox News and parent Fox Corp will head to trial over similar claims it made about voting fraud committed by Dominion Voting Systems.
