Deadly building collapse in Marseille

Two bodies were found in the rubble of an apartment building that exploded and collapsed in Marseille on Sunday.

Six people remain missing as rescue teams continue searching for survivors.

  • About 30 buildings in the area were evacuated following the collapse, according to France's Ministry of the Interior.
  • Two schools and a local gym have been turned into temporary shelters.
  • Authorities are investigating the possibility that the explosion was caused by a gas leak.

  • Eight people died in 2018 when three buildings considered unsuitable for habitation collapsed one kilometer away from the site of Sunday's disaster, but Marseille's mayor said the incidents are not related.
  • A French government report estimated that 40,000 residents of Marseille live in structures that pose health or security risks.
