Dominican anti-narcotics agents seized over 2 tons of cocaine hidden in a banana shipment from Ecuador to the Netherlands.

The seizure is the largest in the Dominican Republic, where over 5 tons of drugs were seized in 2023.

The operation was based on intelligence work at the Caucedo terminal in Boca Chica.

  • A refrigerated container consigned with a load of bananas was opened.
    • The Dominican anti-narcotics agents found hundreds of cardboard boxes containing cocaine.
    • Smuggling drugs in fruit shipments is a common practice.
  • The container came from Ecuador and was headed for Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
  • No arrests have been made yet in the Dominican Republic seizure.

Zoom Out:

  • Norwegian police also recently seized 800 kilograms of cocaine in Oslo hidden in a shipment of bananas.
