Kenyan physics teacher Paul Waweru found a way to power electric bikes with old laptop batteries.
He established a company, Ecomobilus, to sell the vehicles he builds using this technique, Africanews reports.
- Waweru said he began using old laptop batteries after his own electric bike stopped working.
- He
collects batteries from local dealers and separates working cells from
non-functional ones in his workshop in order to build makeshift battery
packs.
- He then inserts the packs along with electric motors into frames taken from old motorbikes.
- He
said his vehicles can travel up to 62.1 miles (100 kilometers) on a
single charge and are cheaper to run than gas-powered motorbikes.
- "The
use of secondary batteries is very significant, especially in the play
of climate change mitigation," said electric mobility specialist Dennis
Wakaba who supports Waweru's new technology.
