Meta began laying off employees in technical positions on Wednesday as part of its latest round of job cuts.
The company announced plans to cut some 10,000 positions back in March, shortly after it laid out plans for more AI investment as it shifts its focus toward generative AI .
- In a prior note announcing the layoffs, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company's biggest individual investment now is "advancing AI and building it into every one of our products."
- Meta also recently formed a "top-level product group" that's focused on generative AI technologies , specifically, building experiences around the AI technology, he said.
- The company also announced its new LLaMA (Large Language Model Meta AI) collection of language models.
- Zuckerberg has said one of his goals is to build on Meta's research so it can "become a leader in generative AI." He said Meta could utilize AI to generate things like images, videos, and 3D assets and incorporate that into consumer products.
