Ocean Cleanup has removed 200,000 kg (440,924 lbs) of plastic from the Pacific Ocean.

The nonprofit environmental engineering organization aims to remove the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch," a cluster of plastic pollution in the Pacific Ocean that is three times the size of France.

  • Ocean Cleanup was founded in 2013 by Dutch inventor and entrepreneur Boyan Slat, who was 18 years old at the time.
  • The organization uses a large collection system to remove plastic waste in an area between California and Hawaii.
  • Ocean Cleanup announced on Tuesday that its System 002/B completed its first plastic extraction of 2023.
  • The 6,260 kg extraction brings the total amount of plastic removed by Ocean Cleanup to over 200,000 kg.
