Only 4% of U.S. teenagers who own a virtual reality headset use it daily, according to a new poll by Piper Sandler. The investment bank surveyed 5,690 teens for its 45th semi-annual Generation Z survey.

  • Of the teens polled, 29% said they own a VR device versus 87% who said they own an iPhone.
  • 14% of the VR device owners said they use their headsets weekly.
  • In the future, only 7% said they had plans to buy a VR headset while 52% were unsure or uninterested.
  • The results suggest that virtual reality is still in the "early days" and VR devices are still not as important as smartphones, Piper Sandler analysts wrote.
  • Meanwhile, Apple is still planning to unveil its first-ever AR/VR headset and the device's xrOS operating system at its WWDC conference in June.
  • Piper Sandler also found that teens use Apple Pay the most of any payment apps, with 39% usage in the past month. Cash App followed at 25%
  • TikTok was the most-used social platform with 37% share, followed by Snap (27%) and Instagram (23%).
  • As far as daily video watching, teens spent 31% of their time on Netflix and 28% on YouTube.
