Researchers from Trend Micro warn of the emergence of a "darkverse" in the metaverse, posing significant security threats similar to the Dark Web.

Threats include criminal activities, extremism, child pornography, and harassment within an unindexed "deepverse" that is hard for law enforcement to infiltrate.

The darkverse, like the Dark Web, will serve as a haven for illegal activities, extremism, and criminal marketplaces within the metaverse.

  • Law enforcement faces challenges infiltrating the darkverse, with criminals using authentication tokens, location-based restrictions, and proximity-based access controls to evade detection.
  • Organizations need to address the security threats of the metaverse, as criminals are already discussing profiting from it, emphasizing the importance of proactive investment.
  • Besides the darkverse, other security concerns in the metaverse include attacks on servers, endpoints, and infrastructure and the potential massive harvesting of personal data.

As the metaverse evolves, various use cases will emerge, such as digital twinning for critical infrastructure troubleshooting or immersive shopping experiences, which may become targets for infiltration and data theft.
