The Biden Administration drafted a report that partially blamed former U.S. President Donald Trump for the chaotic U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan.
A summary of the document said that President Joe Biden was “severely constrained” by the decisions made by his predecessor.
- The U.S. withdrew its forces from Afghanistan after the country's democratic government collapsed in 2021.
- The
National Security Council's full report of the withdrawal effort
remains classified but a summary of its conclusions was released on
Thursday.
- National security spokesman John Kirby defended the
government's actions, saying Biden "acted on the best military judgment
and the best assessments from the intelligence community" adding
that "some of those assessments turned out to be wrong."
- Trump accused the Biden administration of "a new disinformation game" adding that "Biden is responsible, no one else!"
- He described the withdrawal as a “grossly incompetent SURRENDER in Afghanistan.”
- Kirby admitted that the U.S. government failed to predict the sudden collapse of Afghanistan's government and that the evacuation should have begun sooner.
- The U.S. military and its NATO allies attempted to evacuate over 120,000 people in a matter of days.
- A suicide bomber attacked Kabul airport during the evacuation, killing 170 Afghans and 13 U.S. troops.
- Days later, a U.S. drone strike to thwart a potential suicide bomber killed 10 civilians, including seven children.
