Space Force uses metaverse

Space launch operations at Cape Canaveral have been replicated in a digital 3D "metaverse" using real-world telemetry data and high-resolution satellite imagery.

The demonstration, funded by the Space Force's Spaceport Integration Office, merged virtual and physical worlds to simulate launches and plan future operations.

  • The technology combines Cesium visualization software, Unreal Engine's computer graphics game engine, and NVIDIA's Omniverse collaboration platform.
  • The Space Force's Chief Technology & Innovation Office sees potential for using metaverse technologies for training and learning about the space environment.
  • The Spaceport Integration Office aims to improve coordination and predict resource demands and upgrades.
  • The metaverse demonstration at Cape Canaveral tested the merging and exchange of data using plug-ins and frameworks like Universal Scene Description.
  • Maxar created a 3D digital twin of the Earth for immersive training purposes in the U.S. Army.
  • To help plan rebuilding projects following the 2018 destruction of Hurricane Michael, Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida has created a digital twin of the entire base.
