Amazon's media budget growth

What the numbers say: Amazon's global video and music content spending has risen consistently since 2017. The e-commerce giant's budget for TV shows, movies, and music jumped from $13B in 2021 to $16.6B in 2022.

Relevance: Amazon released Thursday Night Football and The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime Video in 2022. The media properties represent two of the largest content investments in Amazon's history. Amazon pays about $1B per year for its rights to stream NFL games, while the production costs for the Rings of Power series amounted to $465M for a single season.

What's next: The WSJ reported that Amazon seeks to rely more heavily on its media operations to generate revenue in the coming years. The company is considering an ad-supported tier of Amazon Prime Video to widen its subscriber base and boost advertising revenue.
