U.S. Senate to hold AI briefings

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and others have organized;three senators-only briefings;covering AI, including a classified briefing.;

The bipartisan briefings will cover general AI applications, U.S. leadership in the field, and AI in defense, intelligence, and their implications.

In;a letter;addressed to colleagues Tuesday, Schumer and other lawmakers said the Senate needs to deepen its expertise on AI, which is "already changing our world."

  • The briefings, set to take place during this work period, will cover the following topics:
    • "Where is AI today?" will give senators a basic overview of AI, what it's capable of, and where it's being deployed.
    • The second briefing, titled "What is the frontier of AI and how do we maintain American leadership?" will explore AI's future and how it could develop over 10 years.
    • The final classified briefing is "How do the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community use AI today, and what do we know about how our adversaries are using AI?"

In April, it was reported that Schumer was;leading a congressional charge;to regulate AI as the industry booms.

  • The New York Democrat has circulated a framework for future AI regulations, which;he said;would help avert "potentially catastrophic damage to our country while simultaneously making sure the U.S. advances and leads in this transformative technology."
