A recent report by the Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) said minimum wage workers across all provinces in Canada could not afford a home while adhering to the recommended practice of allocating 30% of their income for rent or mortgage expenses.

The report is based on data from Oct. 2022.

According to the report, the rental wage for a one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartment in Toronto was $33.62 and $40.03, respectively — more than double Ontario's minimum wage of $15.50.

    • A similar trend was seen in Vancouver, where the one-bedroom and two-bedroom rental wages are $32.36 and $42.60, respectively.
  • Between 2018 and 2022, the proportion of neighborhoods with one-bedroom units worsened in nine of the 36 Canadian Metropolitan Areas.
    • The remaining 28 CMAs either saw no change or the change was smaller than 1.5%.
  • Experts have pointed to the country's rising immigration and limited housing supply for skyrocketing home prices and rents.
