Last week, the U.S. White House announced draft measure guidelines to address rental junk fees and price-fixing in food and agricultural markets.

President Biden announced the measures at the fifth meeting of his 18-agency Competition Council.

The White House said the misguided economic philosophy spanning over the last 40 years has increased concentration in three-fourths of U.S. industries, costing an average household $5,000 annually in the form of elevated prices and reduced wages.

  • Rental housing platforms, Zillow, Apartments.com, and AffordableHousing.com, have agreed to reveal rental expenses like application fees, convenience fees, and waste disposal.
  • A senior official commented that the measures would not directly reduce fees but would enhance visibility for renters and help compare rates.
  • The effort to control junk fees has received bipartisan and public support. However, industry experts accused the administration of regulatory overreach.
