Apple Inc. has established a new business division, the Vision Products Group (VPG), dedicated to advancing its plans for future mixed-reality (MR) headsets.

VPG is responsible for developing the Vision Pro headset and operates independently from Apple's main software and hardware engineering departments, Bloomberg reports.

The VPG has its own dedicated teams for software engineering, hardware development, strategy, computer vision, content, app development, and project management.

  • Collaboration exists between the VPG and other parts of Apple, including the design and operations teams.
  • The recent name change and the use of the plural in "products" suggest that the Vision Pro is the first of many headsets to come from Apple.
  • The VPG is already working on a lower-cost version of the device and a second-generation Pro model.
  • Apple has previously deviated from its standard approach with developing the Apple Watch, placing its hardware and software engineering teams under the COO instead of the senior hardware and software vice presidents.

Recently, the Financial Times reported that Apple was forced to make "drastic cuts" to production targets of the device because its manufacturing partners were struggling with its intricate design.
