OpenAI and The Associated Press (AP) reached a licensing deal for the ChatGPT maker to use AP news stories to train its AI models.

The financial details of the deal — one of the first of its kind for a media outlet — were not made public.

Under the two-year agreement, OpenAI will license a portion of AP's text archive dating back to 1985 to train its AI algorithms.

  • In addition to licensing fees, AP will gain access to OpenAI's technology and expertise.
  • The AP says it doesn't currently use ChatGPT or other generative AI systems to write stories.

The news comes after tech giants OpenAI, Google, and others launched talks with media outlets to forge agreements to use their news content for training AI.

  • Financial Times, News Corp, Axel Springer, The New York Times, and The Guardian were among the publishers involved in the talks.
  • The news industry is actively exploring AI's potential while safeguarding against unauthorized use of their work.
