Over 9,000 authors have now signed a letter demanding fair compensation

Over 9,000 authors have now signed a letter demanding fair compensation and credit from AI companies for using their copyrighted works in AI training.

The list includes renowned writers such as Margaret Atwood, Dan Brown, Michael Chabon, Jonathan Franzen, James Patterson, Jodi Picoult, and Philip Pullman, among others.

In the open letter organized by the Authors Guild, the writers accuse AI companies of unfairly profiting off their writings.

  • The letter, presented on Tuesday, was addressed to the CEOs of OpenAI, Meta, Google, Stability AI, IBM, and Microsoft.
  • "It's only fair that you compensate us for using our writings, without which AI would be banal and extremely limited," the letter reads.
  • It also requests tech giants to seek permission and compensate for using their materials in AI outputs.
  • The companies have either declined to comment or haven't responded yet.

Earlier this month, authors Sarah Silverman, Christopher Golden, and Richard Kadrey sued Meta and OpenAI, claiming copyright infringement.

  • They argue that the companies used unauthorized copies of their works in training their AI models, LLaMA and ChatGPT.
