What it found: In May 2023, almost 60% of new generative AI jobs were found in the Bay Area and other early adopter metro areas like Seattle. Over the past 10 months, just six metro areas (San Francisco, San Jose, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, and Seattle) represented nearly half of U.S. generative AI job postings in the Brookings database. What it means: The report emphasizes the importance of making the development of the AI industry more geographically inclusive. Researchers also caution that the widespread adoption of generative AI may not automatically lead to widespread innovation, job growth, and leadership opportunities. To address this, it says major efforts should be made by policymakers and others to ensure that the benefits of AI are distributed more evenly across regions.
