BuzzFeed plans to incorporate more AI technology into its news and business operations, Chief Executive Jonah Peretti told staff this week.

The digital media company plans to use OpenAI technology to personalize online quizzes and other content.

  • In the memo, Peretti said BuzzFeed aims to "lead the future of AI-powered content" and "maximize the creativity of our writers, producers, and creators and our business."
  • In the case of AI quizzes, OpenAI's text-generation technology could produce unique results based on each person's specific responses, which would be shareable on social media.
  • Peretti estimates AI and data could help create, animate, and personalize media content within 15 years.

  • Last month, BuzzFeed said it would cut 12% of its staff, citing challenging economic conditions.
  • On Wednesday, the WSJ reported that Facebook parent Meta is paying BuzzFeed millions to generate creator content for its social media platforms.
